In the non-Disney Little Mermaid, to make Ariel walk, Ursula splits her tail in half so she bleeds as she walks. Eric finds this incredibly amusing, making Ariel dance while she’s forced to pretend to love it.

However, Eric is supposed to marry another woman, and if he does, Ariel will turn into sea foam. If she can convince Eric that she was the one who saved him from drowning, she won’t die; if she can’t, Eric will get married anyway. Although, Ursula tells Ariel that if she wants to live, Ariel must kill Eric.

Instead of killing Eric, Ariel chooses to believe in the power of love. This plan fails and she dissolves into sea foam.

However, Mermaids don’t have souls and Ariel is forced to work good deeds for 300 years to earn one, only every single time a child cries, she must work another day for every tear drop.
